For the best experience on pointe, dancers need the expertise of a professional fitter. Several factors make repeated fittings necessary. When dancers understand these factors, they are more likely to return for future fittings.
What is a professional pointe fitting?
A personal, professional fitting takes many factors into account. The fitter will evaluate the dancer’s feet for shape and size, but also for strength and flexibility. The fitter observes the dancer’s basic ballet technique, including core strength and alignment on demi-pointe.
Benefits of Reoccurring Fittings?
Dancers should reevaluate their model, size and specifications frequently throughout their training and career. While their feet are still growing, obviously their size will change, but foot size isn’t the only factor that affects fit. The shape of the foot usually continues to change after full growth is achieved, requiring new fittings and sometimes an entirely different pointe shoe model. Technical development often changes a dancer’s preferences for specifications such as vamp height and shank strength.
Even when she is sure what model and size she wants to buy, with many brands of pointe shoes a dancer cannot be assured that her new pair will be just like her old pair without a fitting. . Pointe Shoes are still made by hand and because they are individually handmade, it is still possible to find slight variation from one pair to the next. A fitting allows you to make alterations when needed.
- Teaching and Troubleshooting:
An expert fitter can help a dancer refine her fit beyond the dancer’s own understanding or resources. Perhaps spacers would improve fit and technique, or even prevent injury. Perhaps a struggle with her dance technique could be resolved by a change of model. Problems like these are more difficult for the dancer to solve on her own.
